Crosswise domino duel: rules and printable materials

One player claims horizontal pairs, the other vertical pairs; the first unable to move loses.

Assign orientations

H claims two horizontally adjacent cells per turn. V claims two vertically adjacent cells. Use an empty five-by-five board with rows 1–5 and columns A–E. H starts the first game. Both cells of a move must be empty; write the same turn label in both and draw a small joining stroke so the claimed pair is unambiguous.

Take one pair

Players alternate claiming exactly one legal pair. H cannot rotate vertically and V cannot rotate horizontally. Pairs cannot overlap, bridge a gap, cross a boundary or be moved afterward. A turn may be taken anywhere, not only beside the previous claim. There is no need for physical dominoes: the pencil marks reserve the two cells permanently.

Worked opening

H claims B3 and C3. V may then claim C1 and C2 because they form an empty vertical pair; V may not claim C2 and C3 because C3 is occupied. Empty single cells can remain stranded. Unlike a packing puzzle, you do not cooperate to fill every cell and unused area is not a scoring penalty.

Check the loss condition

When your turn begins, inspect every possible pair in your own orientation. If none exists, you lose immediately; you cannot pass and wait for more space. If a player announces no move but a legal pair is found before resetting, take that pair or choose another legal one and continue. Count neither filled cells nor the biggest connected region as the winner.

Balance a short match

Play a second game with players exchanging H/V and the starting role. A one-game-each result is a drawn match; do not silently award the first player a permanent advantage. For a cooperative learning round, discuss moves aloud without a winner. Use fresh boards, keep coordinates visible, and let a helper mark a named pair. The kit has no automatic legality checker.
