Sixteen matching faces
Cut borders. Backs must be identical and opaque; add the same backing to every card if needed.
Reveal two hidden locations, keep an identical pair and remember the cards that return face down.
Cut sixteen cards: two copies each of eight original symbol patterns. Each pair must have the same face; all backs must look alike and show no identifying number. Use sufficiently opaque paper, or mount every card on an identical opaque backing. Shuffle face down into a four-by-four layout. Card coordinates on the placement mat identify locations, not identities.
Two to six people alternate turns. Reveal one remaining card, leave it visible, then choose and reveal a second different card. Everyone may observe both. If their faces match exactly, take the pair and keep it face up beside you. If they differ, leave both visible for about five seconds, then turn them face down in the same places. Do not move cards to a new location.
A player turns A2 and sees the three-dot pattern, then C4 and sees the zigzag. They do not match, so both return to those same positions. A later player can choose A2 and another remembered three-dot card. The pattern’s label helps distinguish faces; a matching pair has both the same pattern and the same label.
After either a match or a miss, the next person takes a turn: finding a pair does not earn another turn in this version. Empty spaces stay empty. Stop when all eight pairs are collected. Most pairs wins, and equal totals tie. A cooperative version collects all pairs together without individual piles, keeping the same two-card turn and location rules.
Do not peek, mark backs, swap seats midway for a better view or photograph the layout. A helper may turn named coordinates on instruction. For fewer than sixteen cards, remove complete pairs before shuffling and announce the new total. Do not call it a memory assessment. Clear space for everyone to see the same reveals; the printable cards have no online flip animation.
