Set up and play

  1. Agree the gift limit and explain that gifts will be exchanged randomly.
  2. Seat everyone in a circle, each holding one gift. Use each player’s own left and right.
  3. Read the picnic story aloud. Each bold LEFT or RIGHT is one passing instruction.
  4. Pause after every cue until all gifts have moved. Do not pass during other words.

Finish the game

When the story ends, each guest keeps the gift they hold. Someone may get their own gift back. Use this only when gifts are intended for random exchange.

The Picnic Mix-Up · original passing story

The picnic crew LEFT home just after breakfast. Mia turned RIGHT at the corner, while Sam realized the map was LEFT on the table. They went RIGHT back to collect it. Nothing could be LEFT behind today! At the park, a sign pointed LEFT toward the pond and RIGHT toward the garden. They chose the garden, which felt just RIGHT. A squirrel ran LEFT across the path. Sam looked RIGHT, then LEFT, and found a bench. Mia placed the basket on the RIGHT side, with a blanket on the LEFT. There was one sandwich LEFT, but enough fruit to make the picnic RIGHT for everyone. A kite drifted LEFT above the trees, then swung RIGHT when the breeze changed. The crew LEFT the bench for a short walk. At the fork, they turned RIGHT, then LEFT, and arrived RIGHT beside a fountain. No one was LEFT out of the group photo. They walked LEFT around the fountain, stopped RIGHT at the gate, and remembered the basket they had LEFT behind. Back they went: RIGHT at the fork, LEFT at the flowers, RIGHT to the bench. Everything was RIGHT where they had LEFT it. They packed the last things LEFT in the basket and headed home with a story that felt just RIGHT.

Left-right gift pass · host guide

  1. Agree a modest gift limit before the event, or let the host supply similar small gifts.
  2. Seat everyone in a circle with one wrapped gift each.
  3. Explain that LEFT and RIGHT mean each player’s own left and right.
  4. Read slowly and pause at every bold cue so all gifts move once.
  5. At the end, keep the gift in your hands. Do not add extra swaps.

This is a random exchange, not a match for gifts bought for named recipients. With an uneven passing result, a guest may finish with their original gift; that is allowed. Use wrapped tokens or books instead if preferred.
