Neighbour-path words

Make a prechecked familiar word by walking a non-repeating orthogonal path through symbols.

Lower primary · about 6–9 · Language & storytelling · Shape & spatial thinking · Logic & rule checking

Players
Pairs or groups of three
Plan for
10–15 minutes
Bring
Per team: one 3×3 symbol board and path log, one pencil; adult keeps the prechecked word list.

30 pupils: ten teams of three, reader, path tracer and checker; rotate after each accepted path.

Prepare

Columns A–C left to right, rows 1–3 bottom to top. English rows top to bottom: CAT / RED / SIO. Chinese rows top to bottom: 小朋友 / 学校门 / 生日日. Adult prechecks this round’s accepted list: CAT, RED; Chinese 小朋友、学校、学生、生日. These are examples, not all possible words.

Play

Start at any cell and move only up, down, left or right to the next symbol. No diagonal step; never use the same cell twice in one word. Write both word and coordinate path. Adult accepts only words on the prechecked list during this round; keep other suggestions for later verification, without declaring them wrong words.

Example

CAT uses A3→B3→C3; RED uses A2→B2→C2. Chinese 学生 uses A2→A1, 生日 A1→B1, 小朋友 A3→B3→C3. A proposed SIR path A1→B1→A2 is invalid because its last step is diagonal; it is not an accepted example.

Finish

Group completes two different accepted paths and explains every step, then rotates roles. No speed score. For the English board the teacher list is ONLY CAT and RED; the diagonal SIR proposal is a non-example, not an accepted path.

Adapt

Adult reads the two supplied English words or four Chinese words first; shorter Chinese words can be matched to pictures. Trace with a large pointer, and allow a partner to write coordinates. Do not mix Chinese characters with English letter scoring.

Purpose and provenance

Activity aim: Make a prechecked familiar word by walking a non-repeating orthogonal path through symbols.

Practice opportunities: Tracking a sequence, checking adjacency and discussing whether a candidate belongs on an agreed word list.

What adults can observe: Ask for the actual cell path, not only the spoken word; unfamiliar vocabulary requires adult support.

Mechanism and our adaptation: PartyPageKit classroom adaptation of a common activity mechanism. The earliest inventor has not been established; the linked references are identified separately by the editor.

Reference: Hasbro — BOGGLE Game official instructions listing — Related commercial grid-word mechanism. Our original 3×3 paper boards allow only orthogonal steps, with no branded assets or copied boards; not the official product or a full reproduction.

These are planning aims and observable actions, not measured lasting gains. The reference is not an endorsement or a test of our adaptation.

Free material alternatives: Draw a three-by-three board and write the nine supplied symbols by hand.

Player neighbour-word board

Use up/down/left/right neighbours only; never reuse a cell within one word. Adult gives the prechecked word list: CAT, RED.

Accepted wordChecked path
CATA3→B3→C3
REDA2→B2→C2

Only these words are prechecked for the supplied round. Other words need teacher verification. SIR via A1→B1→A2 fails: the last step is diagonal. Do not count it.
