Prepare
Label columns A–D left to right and rows 1–4 bottom to top. Start with every cell empty. Either player may write S or O in any empty cell. Keep a tally for each player and agree that each new three-cell line counts once.
Play
Choose an empty cell and write one letter permanently. Check every horizontal, vertical and diagonal three-cell segment containing that new letter. A segment counts only if it reads S–O–S from one end to the other. Add one point for each newly completed segment. If at least one scores, the same player moves again; otherwise hand over the turn.
Worked example
If B1=S and B3=S while A2=S and C2=S, placing O at B2 completes B1–B2–B3 and A2–B2–C2: two points and another move. A four-cell row S–O–S–O contains one SOS, not two. Existing completed lines never score again.
End and checking
When all sixteen cells are filled, compare total points. Highest wins; equal totals share the result. Mark a completed segment with a light coloured line so the group can audit it. Do not count a bent path or a line with gaps.
Adapt
Use large printed letters with an adult writing a chosen symbol. For a first round use a 3×3 board, explicitly labelled a smaller version; the scoring rule stays the same. Pause to check all new lines before granting the extra move.
Aim: Place either S or O, complete straight S–O–S lines, and score every new line made by the last letter.
Practice within this activity: Place either S or O, complete straight S–O–S lines, and score every new line made by the last letter.
Adult observation: Ask the participant to explain one legal choice. Accept passing and a partner writing; do not infer a lasting ability from a single round.
Mechanism and adaptation: A separately written PartyPageKit version of the mechanism described below, with original examples and materials. The earliest inventor is not established here.
Goals describe observable activity choices, not measured long-term gains or institutional endorsement.
Free alternatives: Draw sixteen large boxes on scrap paper; reuse one pencil and a separate tally.

Player board · either S or O
Write in empty cells only. Score every new straight three-cell SOS containing the new letter. A score grants another move.

Worked position: B1=S, B3=S, A2=S, C2=S. O at B2 makes two new segments, worth two points. Record the vertical and horizontal segments separately. Stop when sixteen cells are occupied; higher points wins, ties share.
