Prepare
White starts A1,B1,C1 and moves toward row 3. Black starts A3,B3,C3 and moves toward row 1. White plays first. The middle row starts empty. Pieces keep their own forward direction after moving.
Legal moves
On your turn move one piece one row forward into an empty cell in the same column, OR capture an enemy one row forward diagonally. Replace the captured piece and remove it from the board. No backward move, sideways step, straight capture, double first move or jumping is allowed.
Worked sequence
White A1→A2; black C3→C2; white A2×B3 captures the black pawn and reaches the far row. White wins immediately. Check the occupied pieces after each step rather than treating a capture as a swap.
End
A player wins immediately upon reaching their far rank. Otherwise, if the player whose turn begins has no legal move, that player loses. Removing all enemy pieces will create that no-move condition. This version has no draw claim based on repetition; every move advances a pawn or removes a piece.
Adapt
Mark arrows beside the board for each colour and let a helper move the selected piece. Practise straight movement and diagonal capture separately. Do not add full chess rules that are absent from this small game.
Aim: Move forward into empty cells or capture diagonally, reaching the far rank or leaving the opponent no legal move.
Practice within this activity: Move forward into empty cells or capture diagonally, reaching the far rank or leaving the opponent no legal move.
Adult observation: Ask the participant to explain one legal choice. Accept passing and a partner writing; do not infer a lasting ability from a single round.
Mechanism and adaptation: A separately written PartyPageKit version of the mechanism described below, with original examples and materials. The earliest inventor is not established here.
Goals describe observable activity choices, not measured long-term gains or institutional endorsement.
Free alternatives: Draw a small board and use large paper disks with W/B labels.
