Mystery touch bag

Describe two touch properties before choosing which known object was felt.

Kindergarten · about 4–6 · Observation & recall · Language & storytelling

Players
4–5 per group with adult supervision
Plan for
8–12 minutes
Bring
Per station: one wide open cloth bag and three adult-inspected large objects: a clean large spoon, a soft folded cloth, a smooth large cup. Optional one response sheet per group.

30 children: six groups of five; adults run only as many touch stations as they can supervise.

Prepare

Adult inspects every item and removes sharp edges, food, tiny parts, scented irritants and anything fragile. Show the three known objects first, then put only one in the wide open bag. Keep the bag below shoulder height and the opening loose. No blindfolds; no head ever enters the bag.

Play

A willing child puts one hand in, or feels the item under a cloth on the table. Without pulling it out, describe two properties such as hard/soft, curved/flat or smooth/textured. Others listen and may choose among the three named objects. Adult reveals it after the guess.

Example

“Hard, smooth, with a curved hollow middle” could describe the large spoon. “Soft and folds under my fingers” suggests the cloth. These are clues, not a rule that every object has only one texture.

Finish

After three reveals, rotate the describer or stop. Each group shares one description that helped. No points for speed or secret surprises; any participant may decline touch and be the listener.

Adapt

Offer property picture cards, adult wording or watching first. Keep each child’s own tactile preferences; never insist on touching an unpleasant material. Wipe shared objects as appropriate.

Purpose and provenance

Activity aim: Describe two touch properties before choosing which known object was felt.

Practice opportunities: Attending to shape and texture, naming evidence and listening to another description.

What adults can observe: Record the properties the child mentions; accept a gesture or picture rather than requiring a correct noun.

Mechanism and our adaptation: PartyPageKit classroom adaptation of a common activity mechanism. The earliest inventor has not been established; the linked references are identified separately by the editor.

Reference: Tasmania Department of Education — Feely Bag — Related tactile-description activity; our known three-object set, supervision and classroom turns are separately written.

These are planning aims and observable actions, not measured lasting gains. The reference is not an endorsement or a test of our adaptation.

Free material alternatives: Use a clean pillowcase held open by an adult and familiar large household objects. No purchase needed.

Buying links: reserved; no purchase is required.

Preview one copy. Print only required player pages; keep this teacher page out of player packets. Give children the choice to watch, pause or use the described adaptation. These are activity practice opportunities, not measured developmental outcomes.

Keep the object identity yourself. Possible clues: spoon—hard, curved hollow; cloth—soft, foldable; cup—hard, hollow opening. Accept other accurate properties. No unique clue phrase is required. Reveal after each guess.
