Set up one visible stack

Cut five equal strips numbered 1 to 5. Arrange them vertically, top to bottom: 3, 1, 5, 2, 4. Everyone may see the numbers. The goal is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from top to bottom. This is a cooperative planning puzzle; nobody wins by moving faster or grabbing the strips first.

Reverse a prefix

Choose a length from 2 to 5 and reverse exactly that many strips starting at the top. A flip of length three changes 3,1,5,2,4 into 5,1,3,2,4. Do not reverse a middle section, sort the chosen strips independently or move a single strip to the bottom. Write the chosen length and resulting full stack after every move.

Use the host key fairly

Keep the verified host sequence separate until the group finishes or asks for a hint. At each step check the complete order, not just whether a large number reaches the bottom. If the physical strips differ from the written stack, return to the last agreed row and replay the move. The host key demonstrates a valid route, not a claim that every shuffle takes the same number of flips.

Share planning roles

Let one person propose a prefix, another predict the complete result, and a third move the strips after agreement. A helper may handle paper for anyone who prefers to direct verbally. Keep the host key face down. A round ends when the exact goal is reached or the group chooses to reset; an unfinished attempt is not a loss assigned to one person.

Vary after the starter

After solving, shuffle the same five strips and try again. Compare valid sequences only when they start with the same order. Count each prefix reversal as one move; do not count thinking time. For a lighter puzzle use three strips. For a harder version use six, but do not reuse the five-strip key. This printable kit records manual moves and does not automatically solve the stack.
