Prepare
Shuffle cards 1–30 and deal three face-down to each player; unused cards stay out of the round. Each player privately reads their own hand. The team shares three life marks. Before the timer starts, confirm that no speech, gestures, tapping, countdown or prearranged waiting code will communicate a number or an intended move. This is an optional quiet game, not a requirement to suppress communication in ordinary social situations.
Play
During the two-minute round, anyone may put one held card face up on the central pile at any time. Values should rise strictly. After each play, every player checks whether they still hold a smaller number than the new top card. If nobody does, continue. If someone does, pause openly, spend one shared life, reveal and discard every lower held card, then resume with the just-played card still as the top. Discarded cards are not successful plays.
Worked example
If the pile was 6 and a player plays 18 while other hands contain 11 and 15, spend one life and discard both 11 and 15. A held 24 is not discarded. The next successful play must exceed 18. Do not lose a separate life for each lower card in the same incident. The exact cards are visible only after this correction, so the correction does not license signalling future values.
Finish and check
The team succeeds if every dealt card is played or discarded while at least one life remains and before two minutes end; record how many were discarded to distinguish a clean success. Losing the third life ends the attempt immediately, even if that removes the last held card. At the timer, stop and reveal the remaining hand count. There are no individual winners and no penalty attached to a particular person.
Adaptation and practical limits
Start with two cards each if the quiet timing is unfamiliar, or run a face-up practice round clearly labelled practice. Anyone may choose another activity. Use an adult timer or a visible clock; the website is not an automatic dealer or referee. No stated waiting strategy guarantees success. Do not infer friendship, trust or attention quality from whether a group happens to synchronize in one round.
Aim: Coordinate ascending card play from private hands without sharing numbers or announcing a turn order.
Practice within this activity: Check the new top against every private hand and apply one shared correction.
Adult observation: Record recovery accurately without attributing a group result to one participant.
Mechanism and adaptation: A separately written PartyPageKit version of the mechanism described below, with original examples and materials. The earliest inventor is not established here.
Goals describe observable activity choices, not measured long-term gains or institutional endorsement.
Free alternatives: Use paper or clean reused cardboard and a pencil. Copy the supplied diagrams and tables by hand; no specialist kit or purchase is needed.
