Prepare

Use only this visible dictionary: CATER,CATCH,CATTLE,CABIN,CABLE,CANDY,CANAL,DOGMA,DOGGY,DONOR. Two players alternate appending one English letter to the right of a shared fragment, beginning empty. No word outside this list is valid for this session.

Play

After a letter, if the fragment exactly equals a listed complete word, its writer loses the round immediately. Otherwise the next player may append a letter or challenge the preceding writer to show a listed word starting with the current fragment.

Worked example

If challenged, the preceding writer must point to one such word. If it exists, the challenger loses; if none exists, the preceding writer loses. A challenge occurs before another letter, not retroactively. Bluffing by writing an impossible prefix is allowed but can be challenged.

Finish and check

For CAT, CATER,CATCH,CATTLE are valid witnesses, so a challenge would fail. CATZ has no witness, so its writer loses if challenged. CATER is already a complete word and loses immediately; it cannot be rescued by proposing a longer word.

Adaptation and limits

After a loss erase the fragment, swap the starting player and begin a new round. First player to lose three rounds loses the session. An adult may read the finite list; this practices English prefixes but is not an exhaustive English dictionary or a hidden fixed-word guessing game.

Purpose, observation and provenance

Within this activity: Extend a prefix without completing a listed word and challenge an impossible continuation.

A partner can replay each legal action and explain the stopping condition; this is an observable task, not evidence of lasting improvement.

Our rules, examples and printable diagrams are separately prepared. The earliest inventor of the broader mechanism is not established here.

Free alternative: Copy the supplied grids, labels and cards onto reused paper. No specialist product is needed. Adults may prepare pieces or act as a scribe.
