Set up and play

  1. Each player needs one six-panel sheet and a pencil.
  2. Give everyone about forty-five seconds for the first field.

Finish the game

Follow the complete ending rule below; a guest may stop or pass without elimination.

Prepare a hidden-ingredient story

Each player needs one six-panel sheet and a pencil. The six fields are a character, another character, a meeting place, something the first character says, a reply, and a consequence. Use imaginary people rather than identifying guests. Everyone fills the same field at the same time, then folds that panel backward so only the next blank field is visible. Choose a passing direction and keep it for all six rounds. Unlike a spoken story relay, nobody needs to preserve the earlier plot: the surprise comes from combining unseen ingredients.

Write, fold, pass

Give everyone about forty-five seconds for the first field. A short phrase is enough. Read the field heading aloud, wait for every sheet, then ask players to fold on its dotted boundary and pass once to their left. Keep the unfilled panels visible and the completed panels tucked behind. Do not peek, copy a previous answer, or write into more than one field. Repeat for each new heading. With three players a sheet returns to someone who has already written on it; that is allowed because the earlier entries stay concealed.

Read a complete example

An example sheet could eventually read: a sleepy astronaut; a polite dragon; at a tiny bus stop; Is this the queue for the moon?; Only on Tuesdays; they opened a midnight bakery. Those are six separate contributions, not a plot that the next writer must predict. After the sixth contribution, fold once more, pass once, and let the receiver unfold the whole sheet. Read fields in their printed order, adding joining words if useful without changing anyone’s contribution. Let the table enjoy an awkward combination instead of correcting it into a sensible story.

Finish without judging the writers

End when all completed sheets have been read or when a writer chooses not to share a sheet. There is no required winner, vote, or elimination. If a word is unreadable, ask its writer to read that single phrase; do not announce who wrote an embarrassing detail. A skipped field can be filled with the neutral phrase supplied on the material page, or a partner can write a suggested answer. Keep a sheet private if any contributor requests it. Do not photograph or publish the collected stories without the contributors’ permission.

Printing and easier participation

Print one sheet per guest on A4 or Letter, using the same paper setting in the page and print dialog. Check the longest heading and the dotted folding boundaries on a test sheet. Fold rather than cut; the paper should remain a single strip. For younger readers, an adult can read one heading at a time while players draw a simple symbol or dictate a phrase. Use sixty seconds if writing takes longer. This page provides fixed blank sheets and an example; it does not automatically invent a story or save handwritten answers. Run another complete six-field round only if the group wants to continue.

Before guests arrive

Try folding a spare sheet through all six boundaries before handing out copies. Check that only one new heading remains visible each time and that earlier writing is actually covered. Keep sheets in the same orientation while passing. If someone misses a round, pause the whole table and fill that field before continuing, rather than letting a single sheet fall out of sequence.
