Scarf toss-and-catch ladder

Try three controlled toss-and-catch tasks at a comfortable height and count attempts honestly.

Players
Pairs in separate clear spaces
Plan for
6–10 minutes
Bring
Per pair: one lightweight clean non-fraying cloth, approximately 30–40 cm square, with no cords or attached weights.

30 children: fifteen pairs; one tosses while one counts, then swap. Adults limit simultaneous pairs to the space available.

Prepare

Adult checks clear space away from faces, furniture, fans and hot surfaces. Keep cloth away from face and neck; never tie or wrap it. Practise a low toss with no added action. Allow seated play.

Play

Each level gets up to three tries. Level 1: toss gently no higher than just above your head and catch with two hands. Level 2: same low toss, touch your own shoulders once, then catch. Level 3: toss, clap once at chest height, then catch. A child may stay at any level, lower the height or decline.

Example

For level 2, partner counts only one shoulder touch between release and catch. If the cloth lands, pick it up after it stops and record “landed”; do not dive or chase into another pair’s space. Landing is a normal attempt, not a penalty.

Finish

After three tries at the chosen level, swap counter and tosser. Stop after both partners have a turn or after six minutes. Cooperative success is agreeing a comfortable task and recording three attempts, whether caught or landed.

Adapt

Toss from a seated position, use a slower larger cloth or simply release from chest height into the lap. Name the simpler version on the record rather than pretending it is the same movement task.

Purpose and provenance

Activity aim: Try three controlled toss-and-catch tasks at a comfortable height and count attempts honestly.

Practice opportunities: Tracking a slow falling object, timing a chosen movement and taking turns.

What adults can observe: Ask which height feels manageable. Record attempts without comparing children or forcing a harder level.

Mechanism and our adaptation: PartyPageKit classroom adaptation of a common activity mechanism. The earliest inventor has not been established; the linked references are identified separately by the editor.

Reference: Snohomish Health District — Active Learning Lessons, Scarf Toss and Catch (p.20) — Related scarf-toss activity; our low-toss three-level sequence omits spins, under-leg throws and speed competition.

These are planning aims and observable actions, not measured lasting gains. The reference is not an endorsement or a test of our adaptation.

Free material alternatives: Use a clean lightweight fabric offcut with adult-checked edges; a large soft tissue is an alternative if it stays intact.

Buying links: reserved; no purchase is required.

Preview one copy. Print only required player pages; keep this teacher page out of player packets. Give children the choice to watch, pause or use the described adaptation. These are activity practice opportunities, not measured developmental outcomes.

No fixed score or pass threshold. Record what actually happened. A lap-drop version is a different task and should be named. Success is a comfortable shared turn, not reaching the highest level. Check cloth edges, space and no attached weights or cords.
